Why isn’t the government supporting landlords investing in heat pumps?

Due to the skyrocketing costs of energy, two years ago we started replacing existing gas-fired boilers with air source heat pumps, solar panels to generate electricity, and battery storage. It cost a lot, and with only a £5,000 grant (now £7,500), it was a big investment.

The first house we did was a large Victorian property (built around 1925), with high ceilings, two bathrooms, and six tenants. It’s north-facing, and at the time, energy costs were at least £450 to £550 a month. After the installation, by March/April, the costs dropped to £180. Over the first year, we saw a 25% reduction, and even during winter months, energy costs never went over £450 and this was with heating and hot water running 24/7, which is the proper way to run heat pumps.

Since then, we’ve installed two more systems with the same results — lower costs, no noise (you can hardly notice it), and no help or advice from muppets like Miliband or the local council! Didn’t have to increase any costs to HMO tenants, where all bills are included.

Yes, we made money, but the downside is I paid more tax. Can’t win! Oh yes we did, hopefully making a better planet for our children and theirs? Why isn’t the government doing more to support landlords making these changes?

Thanks,

John

Reluctant landlord :The environmental problem isn't "bull". It's a pity some people can't see it.
I list problems:
Permafrost melting
Glaciers melting/receding
Bird life in Britain has declined drastically
Wildlife in Britain ditto
Extreme weather - for example temperatures either very high or low.
Bad storms, heavy rain and floods
You can't deny that?

GianACC I don't believe you said that! What planet are you on? Maybe all you want is money at the expense of your fellow beings? I'm challenging you to explain what appears to be a ridicules statement

Reply to the comment left by John Grefe at 25/11/2024 - 09:14No explanation needed, I have shares in BP (and hydrogen companies). We are basically p*ssing money up the wall trying to make our tiny country net zero and it will bankrupt us.
My tenants are interested in their rent and what electricity (which is at an artificially high price) will cost them.
Net zero is basically a pet project for woke liberal middle class that can drive two ton electric cars and can afford net zero , if you are on the sharp end with no money its not exactly the first thing on your mind.
The earth has been through many cycles of freezing and global warming and whatever happens to us the earth will recover.
I would be happy for you to quote me on any of the above !

GianACC : You have some good points, tenants aren't interested in anything except what's in their world; energy costs, rent and the price of a beer. You can't really expect them to think otherwise. You certainly seems to have the means & ways to help the future of this planet. Liberal middle class who drive 2 ton electric cars (not all are liberal), I think are jumping the gun with these cars. More work to improve them is needed. As you mentioned your shares, it's assumed that your only interest in money!! If you have grandchildren, dare they ask you in years to come "what did you do to prevent the bad climate situation we have today"? Oh, you made lots of money. Great now we have an awful world you can't really enjoy it! Maybe I'm wrong.

When my grandchildren (my children don't believe the net zero claptrap!) ask, what did you do to make the world better, I can point to the already huge reduction in our CO2, driving a car which doesn't produce NOx and doesn't churn up the roads because it's so heavy, don't attend festivals and leave all my camping gear behind, don't buy cheap fast fashion from China... the list goes on.
Except, it won't be us who are causing the problems, it will be the likes of China and India, which means whatever we do, even assuming net zero was even possible, it will make no difference.

John, don't get me wrong, I do believe in global warming. However it will take so much good will (India, USA, Russia etc) to put together a plan that will work and NOT bankrupt us all that we may as well accept our fate. Yes, some sea levels will rise and some areas and towns will disappear, some measures may be put in place BUT in the grand scheme of things we ain't going to stop it so no point in making everyones lives poorer pouring money into a hopeless cause. That doesn't mean we will stop installing solar panels or building windmills but we must stop treating net zero as some kind of religion.

Re "New Yorkie": I'm tempted to ask "are you from the USA?"

You could be tempted to ask, but what if I am?
