We cannot continue to let Landlords struggle without support

Responding to the Chancellor’s Winter Economy Plan, Chris Norris, Policy Director for the National Residential Landlords Association, said:

“We welcome the Government’s measures to subsidise wages. We warned that the end of the furlough scheme ran the risk of many households facing further difficulties in paying their rents. Today’s announcement is an important first step to prevent this.

“That said our research still shows that private landlords across England have faced rental loses of up to £437 million as a result of COVID-19.

“It is vital that the Government now follows the example set in Wales and Scotland and develops interest free, government guaranteed hardship loans to help tenants pay off rent arrears built as a result of the pandemic. We cannot expect them, or landlords, the vast majority of whom are individuals without the means to absorb significant losses, to continue to struggle without support.”

Apart from the massive rental sector that is the student population, hundreds of thousands of students tricked into going into University accomodation when their teaching will be mainly or wholly online - so it doesnt matter where they are in the world. Manchester has been pretty open about their economy needing the 150 to 200,000 student population and sod the COVId 19 risk the local economy and UNiversities needing their cut from the rents are put ahead. BUT li'l old landlords treated very differently.

£437 million and counting. It would be interesting to know how Wales and Scotland's scheme of making available interest free, government guaranteed hardship loans to help tenants pay off rent arrears is working out. I can imagine these monies getting misappropriated and would encourage more direct intervention where monies received from these loans for the purpose of clearing rent arrears go directly to Landlords...

Unfortunately it is “Once Bitten.....” I am sure you remember the fundraising drive in 2016? to try and get a Judicial Review of Clause 24...? Loads of us put in loads of money, (Including me) and the two chaps who were spearheading it (cannot remember their names) went up to the high court and entered the plea. The various justices decided that there was not even a case to answer so refused a Judicial Review. This is literally a communist state now, where the govt. takes charge of our private property, and gives it to others, free of charge, while we still have to pay repairs, replacements, etc. Despite zero income.
