Tracking an Errant owner/Landlord?

The tenant has complained of mice in the property – and she knows for sure they are coming from the adjoining house as a previous tenant of the neighbouring house left for that exact reason!

The house in question is an HMO now with people coming and going all the time according to my tenant. She has no idea of the name of the owner or of the landlord, or in fact if they are the same or different people.

Is there a free way of finding out the owner? I need to contact them asap as it is clearly something they should be dealing with. In the interim we have put mouse bait down and are in contact with our tenant as to the situation, but what else can we do?

Many thanks

Reluctant Landlord

I am in Wanstead at the edge of outer London and occasionally have wood mice (or the long-tailed field mouse) in the house in Winter as they are quite frequently found in our larger residential gardens. They are distinguished by having little or no smell, larger ears and eyes than the house mouse and a white underbelly. I have successfully live trapped them but they have to taken over a mile away from the house before release otherwise they will find a way back! As has been said above, the best thing is not to have food readily available, and to seal/put grilles over areas of access. My two lodgers don't mind them but I don't encourage mice in the house! Bearing in mind that they can get through a hole as small as a pencil it can be all but impossible to physically exclude mice.

Clean living is the answer.

Cleanliness may help but I don't entirely agree with that. They come in for the warmth. Have you not noticed they come in in the Autumn. I'm well known for being house proud but I've had them in my own house for years, and have trapped loads of them. However this year I put traps and poisons to rid me of what ever was under my floor boards, and then covered my air bricks with mesh to stop any more. I do not want to speak too soon but it looks as if I have cracked it.
Landlords: stop trying to blame tenants. I used to in the past but with more experience I now know better.
