A survey has found that 43% of the UK’s landlords are optimistic that Labour’s General Election victory will benefit them.

However, the survey also reveals that 34% of landlords believe the election victory will be bad for landlords, while 48% of landlords felt that a Conservative victory would have been a better result.

The findings from Finbri show a mix of optimism, uncertainty and apprehension among landlords.

Party’s focus on renter protections

For the 43% of surveyed landlords who are optimistic, they also hope the party’s focus on renter protections and housing reforms could create a fairer playing field.

One private landlord who has been operating for 10 years said: “Generally, I’m happy about Labour winning, although I do have concerns about their policies for second home and inheritance tax.

“I understand the concerns of other landlords about how the new government might impact them.

“But, landlords were already feeling the need to leave the market under the Conservatives.

“There’s uncertainty about how Labour will handle the rental market, but I’m willing to give them a chance right now.”

Landlords have reservations about Labour’s victory

The survey also found that landlords have reservations about Labour’s victory – mainly around the abolition of Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions.

They also expressed concerns about potential capital gains tax increases, and the uncertainty surrounding Labour’s broader housing policies.

However, landlords hope that Labour’s ambitious target to build 1.5 million new homes over the next five years will create buy to let opportunities.
