Shelter ask for Landlords views

Two Property118 members have pointed out that Shelter are actually asking for views from Landlords and have produced a survey to complete: Click Here.

The request from Shelter states: “Take our survey to help us understand what’s important to you and how we can best work together towards developing a better private rental sector. Answers are completely anonymised.”

Questions include:

  • What were your motivations for becoming a landlord?
  • What are the best things about being a landlord?
  • What are the main challenges you face as a landlord?
  • How would you describe your relationship with your tenants?
  • How do you think Shelter can work better with landlords?
  • What has been your experience of Shelter?

We all hope this can be used as a positive step for Shelter and the PRS to start working together as opposed to against each other to the benefit of tenants.

Ros, I for one do not think that your comments were in any way unreasonable. You stated a fact, one that had occurred to me also.

Sometimes when someones rhetoric is vermantly in support of someone or something you have to wonder where their motives and agenda truly lies.

When reading this whole thread I did think that we had someone who may have had a greater affinity with Shelter than they would otherwise like to admit and then low and behold I also could not find any mention of her online. Something in this day and age hard to master as we all leave our own little trails in the snow in one way or another.

So whilst I would not accuse anyone of anything I do have my doubts and will treat their comments, personally, with caution as a result.

Anyone else can make their own conclusions and share what they see fit.

I like many other landlords in this and other communities online appreciate the enormous contribution you have made for this industry and hope you continue way into the future.

You said there are some very astute contributors on p118 - there are also some who give every indication of suffering from acute paranoia. That does not of course mean that Shelter are not out to get us - there is every indication that they are - but the hysterical response to any suggestion that they might actually be providing an essential service to tenants does nothing to advance the cause of landlords, it just makes us look ridiculous and as blinkered as some of us believe them to be.

' essential service to Tenants ' ? very interesting, ... please tell me more.
( I see they've just opened an expensive Boutique Shelter clothes shop in Swiss cottage, perhaps expensive as they were only making 6 pence profit in the pound on their other shops )

Your swift reply demonstrates exactly what I mean by a blinkered approach. You see what you want to see and remain oblivious to the fact that they provide valuable advice and legal representation to many who would otherwise be at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords.

Reply to the comment left by ameliahartman at 25/06/2019 - 02:13You do know P118 supports The Landlord Alliance, don't you?

I can see how you/Shelter may take issue with Larry's 'say-it-how-it-is' approach (I personally like that about him), but Dr Beck is a prominent writer, critic and somewhat of a report-writer within the industry and has numerous articles and lengthy documents to her name filled with irrefutable evidence. Shelter should consider her work carefully, rather than dismissing it out-of-hand.

It is indeed a union...The Landlords Union. Just look at the top of the page next to 'property118.com'.

I admire that Larry has stood up and created the Landlords Alliance, but I do not like his style as you do; perhaps it’s a marmite thing.

I do not think a confrontational approach and constant vilification of Shelter whatever the truth or otherwise) is the best way to try and engage with them. I am not their greatest fan from what I read, but you can’t expect them to volunteer for constructive dialogue in an ‘attack’ environment.

Modify the approach and maybe we’ll get somewhere.
