Shelter reaction to The GOOD Landlords campaignHousing Charity Shelter appear to want to build bridges with the PRS by “looking for solutions as well as problems”.

Following a conversation between Shelter Policy Officer Robbie de Santos and Mark Alexander, founder of Property118, the housing charity very quickly produced an article on the Charities Policy Blog recognising The GOOD Landlords Campaign.

The discussion came about as a result of Mr Alexander criticising Shelters “Stable Rental Contract” and issuing warnings to landlords that use of such a contract could be in breach of their buy to let mortgage conditions, the consequences of which could be disastrous for both landlords and tenants and result in loans being called in by mortgage lenders.

Mr Alexander said that he was “frustrated” that he had been unable to get this message to Shelter when news of the proposed “stable rental contract” first hit the press last week but went on to say “I’m delighted that I have now been able to have a good conversation with Mr de Santos and it is clear that GOOD landlords and Shelter do have sufficient common ground to build a close working relationship”

Shelters blog, which was released just hours after the discussion between Alexander and de Santos is entitled “We need to talk solutions as well as problems with renting“.

Quote from Shelter’s blog “People will have different views about how to bring about more stable renting (see Property 118′s GOOD Landlord Campaign), but the point is that the debate has now started – its focus must now be on solutions. It’s far too common in policy circles for different people and organisations to agree that there’s a problem, but fail to make progress when it comes to identifying solutions. Discussion can too easily slip into ‘why it won’t work’ but never quite reaching ‘how can we make it work?’ CLICK HERE to read more and please leave a comment for Shelter
