Selective Licensing fails with Newham homeless crisis!

Readers of Property 118 will be familiar with my opposition to Selective licensing. A revenue raising exercise for Bankrupt Councils.

The onslaught on the PRS is now bearing fruit.

The Sky News report in to the homeless crisis in the UK has today released a startling statistic. The Borough with the most acute Homeless problem, where one in twelve of its residents are homeless is the same Borough which was first to introduce selective licensing for the entire borough.

This nonsense together with Section 24 and the generally hostile attitude to Landlords who are called Criminals day in day out by Government and Council honchos.

Yes The London Borough of Newham wins first prize for having more of it’s residents homeless than any other borough. Newham however, will soon have many other Boroughs following its enlightened lead and putting tenants on the streets as landlords, sick of the vilification and constant tax raids, exit the market.

Landlords why bother.

Other jurisdictions outside of the UK offer opportunities. Let us leave the Councils to find accommodation for all PRS tenants. Lets take our hard earned cash elsewhere, to jurisdictions where we are not taxed to death while being called criminals.

yes I totally agree. The government's policy is to systematically destroy the PRS market in favour of the large organisations and at the same time grab as much tax from us as possible. Why they are making us criminals for the most minor offenses is totally beyond my comprehension - it must just be to get rid of us as no-one is going to risk a criminal record for providing housing at a loss to tenants who don't look after the properties once we have ensured they meet council and government standards. Wait until we are gone and they have more homeless and less tax revenue.

I watched the programme and was shouting at the screen why don’t you report the full story and put the dots together. This homelessness crisis is a direct result of this war on landlords and is going to get a lot worse but the mainstream media just haven’t picked up on the real reasons just blaming end of tenancy without explaining why poor sloppy journalism.

HMRC are proposing to use selective licensing and HMOs' to ensure tax compliance by requiring applications to include tax details.
To me this is only going to ensure this dumb paper trail is perpetuated HMRC seem to not realise selective licensing is not nationwide and was set up by the Sec. of State to last 5 years before a borough must review/justify it's scheme and increase its fees no doubt for a further 5 year period!.

By linking in HMRC its going to help councils/boroughs justify their scheme as preventing rogue landlords and requiring yet more resources /fees to admin. their scheme.

HMRC is asking for responses to its consultation right now!!

'Wales', I presume refers to mayor of the London Borough of Newham, Robin Wales. Ultra vires, the Latin for, effectively, 'without authority'.

I'm guessing the suggestion is Newham Council gave away £20m to West Ham United FC for the Olympic stadium conversion to a new football ground and now are strapped for cash evidenced by the increasing homelessness...

I have a rented property ( ex council flat) in Newham and renewed the selective Licence AGAIN In December. I struggle to understand when council own rented flats in the same block DON’T require a licence. But someone who already had the licences for past 5 years without any breache were ordered to renew the license for next five years (charge £500).
I personally think it’s ripoff at its best..

It is extortion end of story and a stealth tax because councils are bankrupt. Yet again landlords are easy targets. I have properties in Liverpool paid and they haven’t been out once to check the properties just took the money. Tony soprano would be proud of this scam
