Growing numbers of renters are having to work more than one job to make ends meet amid soaring inflation and spiking rents, according to a new report.

The findings from SpareRoom, a flat-sharing site, questioned more than 2,000 renters and found that 17% of tenants have more than one job – which increases to 20% for Londoners.

The majority of those working multiple jobs (82%) say they have only had to do this in the last 18 months.

‘Salaries failing to keep pace with inflation’

SpareRoom director, Matt Hutchinson, said: “Rents have hit an all-time high, and with salaries failing to keep pace with inflation, people are really feeling the squeeze.

“With rent and bills eating up a huge proportion of Brits’ take-home pay, many people are having to take on extra jobs just to make ends meet.”

He added: “Rising rents will only cause more affordability issues for UK renters, so it’s crucial the government understands the severity of this situation and the urgent need to do something to put an end to this housing crisis.”

Taking on extra work is to pay the rent

The main reason for taking on extra work is to pay the rent, which has reached an all-time high across the country.

Of those tenants working multiple jobs, 67% say they do it just to be able to afford their rent, and that figure rises to 70% for those in the capital.

The report also reveals that 66% of those working multiple jobs do it just to pay their bills.
