PRS Debate – Government Intervention

An hour wasn’t long enough for this debate, and like a football fan watching his team losing on National TV I was incredibly frustrated watching it. Many key issues were glossed over, in particular the subject of Selective Licensing which the two largest competing landlords associations oppose each others views on and both are which are pro and anti in different areas of the Country.

The Debate took place at The National Landlord Investment Show in Olympia yesterday

What hope is there for us if the two largest bodies claiming to represent landlords  cannot agree, never mind Local and Central Government?

The key message I particularly welcomed was that landlords must all write to and visit their Councillors and MP’s to explain the issues affecting them. It’s too easy to assume somebody else will do it, but that’s how most landlords seem to think unfortunately.

If you’re not happy with the way the PRS is being treated, just ask yourself what you’ve done about it. If you do regularly write to and meet your MP then good on you. Please keep it up and encourage other landlords to do the same. If you haven’t explained to your local Councillor and MP why continued attacks on landlords will inevitably increase homelessness, well shame on you!

One thing that I found very instructive was David Smith's statement that when a constituent visits his member of parliament with a piece of research from the RLA it very often leads to the MP asking for a meeting with them which gives them an opportunity to establish a positive relationship with that politician and influence the way in which he thinks about the PRS.
