Nottingham Selective Licensing has inspected 600 houses in 3 years with 76 staff. One man in an MOT station could have inspected 6240 cars in that time.

Nottingham Selective Licensing has just published its mid-scheme review.

They’re inspecting on average 3 houses per year per member of staff. Most businesses would go bust at that rate.

So 1 staff is doing 1 inspection every 4 months. How is that improving houses?

270 houses have been improved.

There have been 22,000 Licence applications at an average of let’s say £700 per licence. That’s £15.5 million from licence payers from tenants rent increases to fix 270 houses!

Had licensing not been introduced, the Council would still have improved roughly 270 houses (which sounds low anyway).

As an aging landlord who will start to downsize their portfolio one property at a time over the next few years, the only house I have within the scheme area will be my first one to go, as I want to spend less time mucking about with bureaucracy, let alone the additional cost. This will make a lovely long term tenant homeless. Without the Selective Licensing Scheme, this would be one house that I would keep indefinitely as she is such a model tenant. I could try and sell it with her as a sitting tenant, but the discount she currently gets for being such a valued tenant would surely disappear.

I note that the mid-term report does nothing to discuss the impact on evictions either.

Isn’t this the council that lost about £38 million with their Robin Hood energy scheme?

Reply to the comment left by Jessie Jones at 31/07/2021 - 22:04I keep telling tenants this. I'm getting older. Previously I'd service your boiler & u tell me when some'ats wrong.
I say u aren't the problem, it's the Council now with Licensing (& UC), I can't carry on with Licensing demands & hours on the most Victorian website on the planet.
And they come fine me cause you've took your batteries out the smoke alarm
U could have stopped forever, but not now.
I had Letting agent flat come up the other day, 63 year old bloke got offered Council house, I offered it a few mates quick, all Letting Agent nice ready to go. One din't want it cause in the Licensing area, & this is very common.

And been warned to not dabble in business's they have no experience of. Yet they can get 20 year old's to try to tell us how to rent houses out when we've had same tenants for 24 years with no problems pre-Licensing.
