Update: Please now email your pledges to Info@landlordsalliance.co.uk

For the past 18 months, I have mulled over the idea of setting up a new National Landlords association. I won’t bore readers to death explaining why. We all know how frustrated and sickened the community is with the other main associations failing to aggressively fight our corner and instead assist the councils implementing their rotten Selective licensing schemes. Enough is enough.

We could talk forever, but it is now time for action. I have held off taking this leap in the hope that somebody else would take up the baton. I completely understand the reluctance of anybody to get involved. Mark summed it up. A most time consuming venture.

As things stand now, the show is almost ready for the road.

I have set up the National Landlords Alliance. Before I go any further if the National Landlords Association wish to take issue with the National Landlords alliance, I say bring it on. Do it now.

Moving on Banking facilities are in place. I am prepared to act as CEO without salary initially to get the organisation up and running. The organisation will operate out of offices supplied by me on a rent free basis, until profitability can be achieved.

I have a PR/Secretary lined up who will join us subject to salary discussions. She has experience in the industry as well as a journalism degree and lobbying experience.

Following extensive negotiations over several weeks I have got agreement from the former National Chair of the FSB to also join us. Mr Allan has extensive lobbying experience including vast experience gained from negotiating with the former PM Cameron and Osborne, as well as dealing with the devolved Governments of Scotland ,Wales and NI. This would complete the team initially.

I also have organised a preferred solicitor to assist members. The individual I have in mind is a former local authority prosecutor.

We will not be selling courses or cheap smoke detectors. We will absolutely never assist councils implementing any scheme to the detriment of landlords. As regards document downloads, they are available from other sources.

We will be 100% focused on aggressively fighting the Landlords corner.

The fee to join would be £100 pa.

At this stage all I seek is pledges.

If the figures are right we are good to go. A word of caution however, and I don’t mean to insult regular contributors, but at this stage our biggest enemy is Apathy.

If we can get the pledges ie a min of 1000 members we have a new organisation.

The NATIONAL LANDLORDS ALLIANCE LTD.

Larry Sweeney

Update: Please now email your pledges to Info@landlordsalliance.co.uk

With everyone on board we will hopefully move rapidly to collating the membership required with everyone’s help

Robert, the mob you, and I, joined as lifetime members awhile back is a different animal. The money raised from contributions from likes of you and I formed a fund for legal/class actions like the one against West Brom that spawned the idea. I understand a case or two have been successfully undertaken and since costs were won as well the fund you and I helped establish remains at level it was at outset.
Larry's proposals are of course different being setting up an organisation to fight Shelter etc on a broad front. I urge you to join.

Thanks Richard, I'm still unsure of what cases the Property118 Landlords Union is currently fighting, or taking on, so it would be nice to get an update now and then. Also, I'm not sure why it is not fighting things like the Nottingham selective licencing scheme because that affects lots of landlords (so would be a class action) and I believe there are loads of flaws and irregularities in the consultation and implementation process (see the various posts from Mick Roberts). I believe that Larry has been fighting a similar scheme in Liverpool, with some success, and some other selective licencing schemes around the country have also been shown to have flaws (or be unlawful in some ways), so surely selective licencing would be a case where all these separate cases should be brought together and a class action brought to ensure that fute selective licencing scheme are brought in fairly, or not at all.

In relation to pledging the £100 membership fee to Larry, I have already sent the email doing this.

I think we have to weigh up carefully the chances of success and if we're likely to win costs.

Quoted from Mark's comment on https://www.property118.com/vision-independent-organisation-represent-uk-landlords/comment-page-5/#comments

"Meanwhile, we do have The Landlords Union which about 60 landlords joined and paid a lifetime membership fee of £600. Those funds are held in reserve to fight cases affecting to or more of our members.

We have utilised the fund twice now and recovered all costs on both occasions. Both cases were private prosecutions, which were dropped prior to going to Court of the basis of settlement subject to a gagging agreement, so sadly we cannot publicise the details and had to delete the articles we had written prior to taking action. All I can tell you is that both cases involved fraud by abuse of position against directors of letting agents who used clients money to support businesses which ceased trading."

We also contributed £100 per member to Axe The Tenant Tax as promised.

Robert, I think the actions successfully fought and won by the Landlords Union were specifically of the type like the West Brom saga. Namely against lenders trying it on via interest hikes. Mark and/or Neil may correct me if I'm wrong. Of course even with West Brom while we knew we were in the right it was by no means certain we would win so Mark Smith's wise opinion of likelihood of success would always be a factor in determining whether to commit funds to a case or not. What he would opine re the Nottingham selective licensing scheme I cannot surmise but since some grey areas may be involved maybe this would not be the kind of case the Landlords Union would take on committing its own funds - yours and mine? If 100's/1000's of landlords are prepared to commit financially to a class action though then fair enough but that brings us back to combating the apathy that will be come up against. Thanks for pledging support to Larry. Sorry I inferred you were only considering it at this stage.

Shelter could do with being investigated by whoever exposed the financial misdemeanors of 'Kids Company'

Brilliant words Rob.
Yes, needs to be shown as coming from the tenant and how the tenant is gonna be affected.
Cause that's how I turned it round in Nottingham.
Cause at the outset, most tenants were saying Yeah good Charge the Landlord, he's a rip-off, I don't like him.
Whereas after my posts and vid and website etc., Majority of tenants in Nottingham now know the council have gave them and the Landlord a Tax for doing nothing wrong, and in my case the majority of my tenants have been so happy, I've kept my rent increases small cause of it and not selling cause of it.

We had to show whatever charge and rules and conditions the Council gave us, wasn't ultimately on us, it filtered down to and affected the tenant massively.

Apathy is a killer.
I am active on 4 committees running Landlord networking groups so have mega experience apathy is going to be this groups the real killer.

The great advantage Property118 has is its proof of successes. lIke many messages i was also one of those that paid my money and took the gamble with 118 and was chuffed to have won.

Now i want this to work so am prepared to shout about it when its reaady for marketing. - I'd go even further and travel around (South England) shouting to every netwrok group

So get it going ASAP
Allan
