Landlords – Who gets your vote?

Landlords – Who gets your vote?

Hi, Do landlords have a viable political home? It appears not. Historically the Conservative party has been the party of the landlord, permitting the market to control itself to a large extent. This is no longer the case.

Why? Because we have a left of centre conservative government (note the small c). The tail is wagging the dog and in an effort to win voters, they are alienating their core voters in their masses.

Who to vote for then? Certainly not Labour, we only need to look at the London Mayor to see the path they would lead us down. Rent controls, mandatory licencing and higher taxation (and that’s just the start).

Research papers initiated by the Labour Party have even gone as far as to state that compulsory purchase at (market rates!!!) should be considered as a way to bolster the stock of social housing. The Green Party – even further left than Labour and posing the same, if not, a greater level of risk to the Landlord.

I suspect the first initiative would be mandatory EPC Grade A’s all round irrespective of cost.

This leaves us with Reform UK, led by Richard Tice. I live in an area of the UK (Bury North) with the smallest margin between Conservative and Labour at the last election.

Recently our conservative (small c again) MP James Daly, wrote in the local press that his greatest concern at the next election was not Labour, but Reform UK.

I agree with him, our Local Labour candidate James Frith is seen locally as weak and unviable and unlikely to take many votes.

However, many people will make a statement vote for Reform UK, even if this increases the likelihood of Labour gaining a seat.

My question to you readers is, should we vote Reform in the knowledge that it will allow a Labour win or should we vote Conservative?

Should we be looking at sending a clear message to the conservative government that will hopefully make them take notice and restructure themselves as a Conservative party, centre right to win the following election?

Or should we vote Conservative in the hope of weakening an incumbent Labour government?

Or could the seemingly impossible happen and the nation elect Reform UK. This would, be the best result for Landlords.

What do you think?

Steve

Reply to the comment left by Tom McGrath at 03/01/2024 - 14:53There is a ZERO percent chance that Labour will improve the PRS, they are not even pretending they will. Better not to vote at all than vote for things to get worse. Many people believe things cant get any worse, but things can get worse, and this Labour will deliver that.

I’m voting for Reform U.K.

If you want change from the two party system, then vote for it!

Labour and Conservatives will destroy your BTL business, soon private landlords will be a thing of the past.

So, if you value what you do and want to carry on doing it, vote Reform U.K.

Don’t spoil your paper and don’t abstain, do vote Reform U.K.

Dream on? Who thought of Rwanda? Aren't they neighbours of Nigeria, equal models of financial and moral rectitude?

I too have voted Conservative for all of my 69 years. Given that the Conservatives expect that Labour are going to get a landslide victory, what is a strategic vote?
Maybe the loudest message is to vote Reform!
It is very difficult to get into the heads of politicians these days. It seems, more than ever, that it is all about controlling the population, lives and finances.

Im 79 and have a menu sized portfolio...
When I came of age to vote I asked my mother for help inch to vote for.

You were born Labour and should vote labour..
at my age maybe I should now start voting.
But my view is. :_

Politics...... Poly ( more than one )Tics. ( Blood suckers )

Lets step outside this box and look at the numbers....

45% of the population voted. So by numbers 55% didn't want a government !!!! That leaves us in quite a mess, but we are already in one.

Yes Minister. as his senior Civil servant said to the PM. So PM you are off electioneering SO WHO DO YOU THINK RUNS THE COUNTRY THEN when you are so busy.

Watch and rewatch Yes Minister. things like. We need to reduce the civil servants. Sir Humphrey replied lets. re name l all these janitors etc THERE YOU ARE PM lost 3000 civil servants.. ( but still on the pay roll )

Well it looks like labour have a good chance but to help the opposition in government there is a need to make sure its not a landslide. We will need the Conservatives who will be the minority to have a strong voice in Parliament to oppose unnecessary regulation that adds costs and hassle for tenants and landlords . So I believe its important to return a strong opposition i.e. the Conservatives to hold the new government to account and discourage Labour from wasting tax payers money and let the economy sink . Although Reform may have some good ideas I don't believe they will have a voice in the next Parliament so they to me are a wasted vote. I would vote Conservative will may help Labour from implementing more extreme policies.

in 2019 The Conservative Party won a landslide victory with a majority of 80 seats,a net gain of 48, on 43.6% of the popular vote, the highest percentage for any party since the 1979 general election.
But Corbyn lost the electoin. Will Labour again ever field such a poor team?
Labour lost- the tories did not win!!!!!!!!!!

Am disappointed in the large amount of blind support for Reform when nobody knows what their landlord policies are. Im sure all 1.8m of us mostly voted Conservative in 2015 but we had no idea they were on the path to destroy us. Also Im guessing quite a few of us are in professions also screwed by Tory IR35 taxation. Just reading the Reform policy doc, it is mostly hot air than anything of substance and absolutely not a mention of housing. Let’s also remember Reform most certain policy - zero immigration - conflicts with Landlords as immigration does boost rental demand. If you come on here supporting Reform you need to explain your reasoning. Binface/spoilure seems the only option

Yes GB News, viewable via YouTube is getting greater viewing numbers than Sky news, to me this is highly indicative of the state of frustration with the left wing bias of the mainstream news channels.
