Landlords – Who gets your vote?

Landlords – Who gets your vote?

Hi, Do landlords have a viable political home? It appears not. Historically the Conservative party has been the party of the landlord, permitting the market to control itself to a large extent. This is no longer the case.

Why? Because we have a left of centre conservative government (note the small c). The tail is wagging the dog and in an effort to win voters, they are alienating their core voters in their masses.

Who to vote for then? Certainly not Labour, we only need to look at the London Mayor to see the path they would lead us down. Rent controls, mandatory licencing and higher taxation (and that’s just the start).

Research papers initiated by the Labour Party have even gone as far as to state that compulsory purchase at (market rates!!!) should be considered as a way to bolster the stock of social housing. The Green Party – even further left than Labour and posing the same, if not, a greater level of risk to the Landlord.

I suspect the first initiative would be mandatory EPC Grade A’s all round irrespective of cost.

This leaves us with Reform UK, led by Richard Tice. I live in an area of the UK (Bury North) with the smallest margin between Conservative and Labour at the last election.

Recently our conservative (small c again) MP James Daly, wrote in the local press that his greatest concern at the next election was not Labour, but Reform UK.

I agree with him, our Local Labour candidate James Frith is seen locally as weak and unviable and unlikely to take many votes.

However, many people will make a statement vote for Reform UK, even if this increases the likelihood of Labour gaining a seat.

My question to you readers is, should we vote Reform in the knowledge that it will allow a Labour win or should we vote Conservative?

Should we be looking at sending a clear message to the conservative government that will hopefully make them take notice and restructure themselves as a Conservative party, centre right to win the following election?

Or should we vote Conservative in the hope of weakening an incumbent Labour government?

Or could the seemingly impossible happen and the nation elect Reform UK. This would, be the best result for Landlords.

What do you think?

Steve

I guess Reform are sitting on the fence for now with PRS. Immigration is a huge part of housing shortage fuelling supply and demand but I think in reality that it doesn't affect smaller LL's as many would not let to that part of the market to put it carefully in case of offending someone. It's the policies that affect who most people vote for so is an important point in choosing.

Looking forward to the PRS specific questions asked by myself and others wrt Reform (Ltd co) above, being answered by those who are of the opinion that they will be good for small-medium sized PRS LLs.

Smaller LLs (who previously wouldn’t) are now letting to Serco etc as a direct result. Signing 5yr leases etc.

I have contacted Reform re: their PRS policies and await a reply. If I get one I will post it on here but won't hold my breath. My local MP has never replied to my e mails, except std. read receipt, concerning PRS and hence absolutely will not get my vote.

I believe very mixed success. Some say never again, others say best thing they ever did. Others somewhere in the middle. It’s not my target market though, seems to be HMO owners who are approached in the main.

I wonder as a Ltd company if they can even publish a ‘manifesto’ tbh. All sounds as dodgy as it’s predecessor and undoubtedly similarly dubiously funded-linked.

Good luck with getting future responses from any. Personally I’m waiting for a GE to be announced and then I’ll read all the manifestos. I’m a floating voter, however there are at least two who are led by those who having been previously demonstrably dishonest and dubiously funded, that I will never lend my vote to.

What is it with the (Ltd Co)? To my knowledge, Reform UK is registered with the Electoral Commission, and is, therefore, subject to the same rules as other political parties.

I must say I'm a little disappointed with the quality of this debate. Most people seem to think 'What's in it for me" and seem to have decided, without evidence, that Reform UK will deliver for the PRS. Remember Brexit? They lied to you then. Don't get fooled again.

We are all entitled to our opinions and most people vote for whoever affects them the best. My dad was strong Labourite, my mum Tory and my older brother a communist in his early days. Very lively debates in our household LOL.
