My landlord is being evicted and gave me a 4 days notice to leave as well

I have been sub-renting a bedroom since February 2013. The couple who is sub-renting me the room have received a court order to evacuate the property on the 29th of July 2014. However, they only told me this on 25th of July at 11pm.

I had a contract with them which was running for a month, but we didn’t renew it last year. I’ve been paying my rent on a monthly basis and gave them a 1 month deposit when I moved in.

It is very difficult for me to pack, look for a new bedroom and move out with a such a short notice. I also work from Mon-Fri and it’s too late for me to ask for a day off at my office.

Could you please tell me what are my options to postpone the eviction? I don’t even have the real landlord’s contact details.

What will happen if I’m still in the house after the 29th of July? I just need an extra week to be able to move out on the 2nd of August.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Victoria,

That's awful, but you should still pursue your rights.

Take Chris' advice and make a note of anything you're forced to leave and ensure the bailiffs and if possible the house owner have the details.

It may not be too late to pursue this with the owner - there's a very simple procedure to find out who this is online with Land Registry: http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/property-ownership.

I suspect your "landlords" don't want you to know who THEIR landlord is because they haven't told them - they'd have less excuse then not to pay their own rent! The rent you've being paying will be half theirs - at the minimum!

In any case, make sure you claim the rent you're owed in lieu of notice, your deposit, and expenses for the hostel, back from these people.

Please let us know how you get on and good luck!

there is as far as i can recall no county court in Southwark - its the Lambeth County Court you need to contact is that who you called? You can wait to speak with the bailiff tomorrow and explain you are an interested party who needs to be granted access to remove goods and possessions - take pictures or make a list of what is yours so if you have to leave anything behind there is no mistaking what is yours. make sure you fully understand who has the keys and how to contact them so you can get access to your stuff. Good Luck.
