Is the NRLA still run for a common purpose?

Is the NRLA still run for a common purpose?

Hello, I posted below as a response to a topic last week but maybe this should be discussed more as many seem to questioning the actions of the NRLA in respect of the Renters’ (Reform) and the Renters’ Rights Bills.

The NRLA is a company that saw a gap in the market to make money. It is not any sort of Union.

It mostly makes money from:
(1) Those that, and sorry if this offends, are too lazy to research, learn and understand what is required to be a PRS landlord, ie the obligations and responsibilities, to amass the correct legal and regulatory documentation needed and keep abreast of the changes
(2) Running expensive courses
(3) Advertising developments and other property related matters for third parties from which, and others may be able to confirm, they obtain commission or fees.

The NRLA states it “is a not-for-profit organisation, limited by guarantee rather than by shares, which means any financial surplus it derives goes back into the business for the benefit of its members”.

In English law, an association is a group of people which is formed and acts for a common purpose. The common purpose should be the protection of PRS landlords and their activities and importantly to fight their corner.

The people that join the NRLA seem to have no say in how the company is run, nor how it is to act for a common purpose, nor has any sort of constitution, and nor is the leadership put in place by those who are members.

Call me a cynic but personally I believe that the NRLA may not now be fit for purpose as “an association” to act for the PRS landlords common good or what PRS landlords need today.

Thank you,

Judith

I personally would much rather have an organisation that represents us rather than act against us. I have read numerous articles written by the NRLA and they all seem representative for the tenants and not for the landlords.

Unfortunately, the articles I have read shock me as, they all seem to be on the tenant's side and not that of the landlord’s.

This is about the first forum that I have read where the NRLA have been praised and perhaps rightly for assisting landlords in keeping up with the law, giving advice, providing landlord discounts, appropriate courses and the like.

In respect of representing landlords, I would in my opinion say that they are definitely the wrong organisation for these purposes and, would do very well in acting for tenants and their organisations such as Shelter.

I was much happier when I was just a member of the NLA as I did not have to read such infuriating comments all of which are against landlords.

I think if the NRLA did nothing and just stuck to assisting landlords in keeping up with the law, giving advice, providing landlord discounts, appropriate courses and the like it would be far better.

To sum it up, at present, we do not have a Landlord organisation that represents us. We have one that opposes Landlords.

Separate the services from the lobbying activity (which no sane landlord could possibly agree with...certainly not enough to sustain those activities if they were detached from the 'useful' services/forms/advice they provide).

I am generally happy with the resources provided by the NRLA and like many others here, I would rather have a reliable source for downloading legal documents and getting advice than try to figure it out on my own.

However, I do think that the one major faux-pas that the NRLA is making is pushing for the abolition of S21. I am in the process of writing a letter to them on the matter (which I am happy to share on this forum).
Landlords MUST and SHOULD have the right to get their asset back without having to give a reason, as long as they follow the correct legal process. It is called respecting the right to ownership of property - one of the pillars of a democratic society.
This principle goes way deeper than tenants and landlords rights. It's what holds our society together.

The NRLA have in a way forced the previous government to have no say but to want to ban Section 21 and now that the labour government have come in, they are elated as the labour government wanted the Section 21 banned all along.

Perhaps you should ask in your letter if members of the NRLA could cast a vote on this.

The NRLA, like any business, is run for the benefit of its directors and staff.

Landlords are just the mugs that pay the fees.

It’s not difficult to find the info that you need, online. Type the following into a search engine…

Site:gov.uk

Followed by the subject you are looking for.

For example…

Site:gov.uk Housing Act Section 8

The NRLA does not represent professional landlords. One just has to look at the state of the industry to see how little they have done. Government does not listen to them, Shelter/Generation Rent has far more publicity than the NRLA.

Its time for a robust association that actually can make a difference.

I couldn't agree more with the above posting, they have not been fit for purpose in terms of serving the people who pay their wages we used to be able to as members access the courses etc to accrue points etc now we have to pay out ridiculous prices, I cannot think of anything that they have done that has benefited landlords all the main legislation that has been piled upon us has been discussed and then put upon us, the endless list of how financially landlords have been affected by legislation that the nrla have been on the unable to stop shows they are not fit for purpose, and it sickens me when I see them boasting on the website about being this of the year or that of the awards and dining out and flashy photos they do not represent us, the reality is unlike other organizations we cannot strike they should focus their attention 100% on getting mortgage interest relief brought back that would make a massive difference to rent not going up and supply they also need to start talking about mass immigration which is distorting the market massively, HMO properties for example have been hammered we had bedsits been charged for council tanks and yet neighbours who were in hmos were not charged for council tax identical circumstances we now find ourselves in a position where nobody in the house pays council tax not the bed sets or the self-contained flats the self-contained flats paid council tax into several months ago now we get one bill for the whole house of 200 odd pounds a month but the flats are paying no cancel tanks even though LED the legislation as I read it said self-contained flats were excluded from the new legislation on council tax that came in in December why should somebody in a flat in the house opposite pay council tax but the flat in the HMO does not pay council tax it's the depriving the local council of thousands of pounds of revenue, apologies for any mistakes I'm using microphone texting and for some reason I cannot bring up the previous sentences to check
