Green Homes Grant disappointment?

The Green Homes Grant is a useless scheme for landlords.

1. It appears that tenants on benefits cannot apply for improvements to their rented properties.
2. It does not include upgrading boilers.
3. The Primary category is a financially unviable barrier to accessing the Secondary category. eg who would want to install a heat pump just to access double glazing?

Editors Notes:

Under the Green Homes Grant Scheme, homeowners and landlords in England will be able to apply for vouchers worth up to two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of their home. The maximum contribution is £5,000 except for households on low incomes will be eligible for up to 100% funding, up to a maximum of £10,000.

John is absolutely right. You need to put in cavity wall installation, Loft Insulation, a heat pump or underfloor installation first. You then get a grant of up to 2/3 of the cost towards that.

After that, you can then use up the residual grant on double glazing, up to a maximum of £5000 in total. I for one have decided not to bother.

Plus you can only upgrade Double Glazing from Single Glazing! As usual, headline grabbing with no real substance 🙁

See nothing here of much benefit really. Most of these jobs/improvements you can do yourself at a 1/3 of the cost anyway, no really incentive to make changes or spend money on if it's all linked to multiple purchased at inflated green eco prices frankly. My guess is it will be a flop like the last green deal.

Hi John,

I have recently started surveying houses under the ECO3 scheme which covers a free survey of the property and a grant towards a new energy efficient boiler and any insulation measures. The past few surveys i have done have been for tenants who have applied for a free survey with consent from their landlord. Under ECO3, either you as the landlord can apply for a free survey and potentially get a grant for a new energy effecient heating system and insulation measures, or your tenants can apply but they must get consent from the landlord before any installation/upgrade works can take place.

If you want any further information, you can always drop me an email:
ben.richardson@ecomeasuresltd.org, i'll be happy to help.
