I felt better off in the 70s, in spite of galloping inflation, and local trains were often cheaper than buses. When I did go by train, the trains were fine and ran on time as often as they do now. (It's better now for several trains to be 30 mins late now than for one to be 90 mins late - although probably more damaging and resulting in more missed appointments for passengers). I still can't afford to travel by train at the times that I need to travel and the pricing structure is so obscure it's impossible to budget. At least in the 70s you knew what the cost was. The infrastructure isn't owned by the train companies BTW. There isn't really a commercial choice - you get the train that goes to where you want to go at the time you want to travel.
Of course, I was one of those awful trade unionists back then (although most of my trade voted Tory), so I'm sure I'm biased.
Same with gas and electric - the whole idea of having to switch to get a better deal all the time for the same product is just crazy, and our water is "supplied" by a French company - how is that sensible?

East Coast mainline - very profitable under public ownership, huge subsidy now it's private. Doctrinaire dogma privatisation under Tories. Overall, much larger subsidies to private rail than public rail, in real terms. Just look it up.
Gross inefficiencies in water, gas electricity. State control as long as it's French or German or Chinese seems OK to the Tories.
If you've ever worked in a big company you'll know the waste of time that is endemic. I consulted to a lot of big companies, a couple state owned. There was damn all difference, except that the private ones thought they were efficient as they'd swallowed the dogma.
Monopoly capitalism doesn't swallow its own. The S24 madness was introduced to reduce eventually the number of competitors to the big boys.

I had a play with the Q&A. The bar is quite a long way up for an average small landlord.
How does the 'optimal' approach compare when a small landlord sees their investments eaten away to the last ÂŁ100,000 by the healthcare pledge?
Surely at this point CGT and SD are painful but not as painful.

I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge on the railways and to a lesser extent on the utilities. I think the problem here is they are never 'properly privatised' - there is the issue of the huge investment in the infrastructure and the difficulty given the scale to create true competition. I don't have an ideal solution to this but it would not be nationalisation. I have indeed had the misfortune to work for a large multinational bank for 11 years and actually when I think about it you are right there were a lot of ineffective people there. There was a lot of waste from one re-organisation to another. 'Damn all difference' maybe in that sense but the difference is that in the private sector inefficiency is something as a tax payer that I don't have to subsidise - (apart from your train example perhaps to a limited extent) but nothing compared to my tax payer subsidy to public sector NHS, education, defence etc I have a hernia op that is done on the NHS budget but in a private hospital, agency nurse staff charged out at crazy rates, supply teachers in permanent positions, fleets of new nimrod aircraft built then scrapped, now re-ordered and so on and so on !
