Gas boiler ban dropped but homes could still be forced to switch to heat pumps

Plans to ban new gas boilers by 2035 will be scrapped, but nearly all homes must install a heat pump.

According to the i newspaper, a ban on gas boilers being installed in newly built homes will be confirmed later this year, taking effect before the end of the decade.

However, the rule that would have stopped people from replacing their old gas boilers with new ones after 2035 has been dropped.

Despite this, the government has confirmed that nearly all homes will eventually need to install a heat pump instead of a gas boiler, a change that could cost homeowners and landlords thousands of pounds.

1% of homes in the UK currently use a heat pump

Only 1% of homes in the UK currently use a heat pump, with 58% mainly using gas central heating and 24% using an electric heating device, according to the i newspaper.

Heat pumps are expensive to install, and while the government is pushing hard for their adoption, analysis shows they don’t always lead to better EPC ratings and can result in much higher running costs.

Data from the energy efficiency platform epIMS shows that the estimated annual bill for heating and hot water with a ground source heat pump is £806 – only £9 less than a traditional gas boiler. Heating a home with an air source heat pump will cost £1,001 a year, on average.

£7,500 subsidy for heat pumps

The Labour government claim heat pumps can save people money, despite many older homes being unsuitable unless they undergo costly renovation.

The government has promised to extend a £7,500 subsidy for those prepared to switch to heat pumps.

However, the government has declined to comment ahead of the publication of its “warm homes plan”, which will offer new details on how the move to low-carbon heating methods can be achieved.

I’ll start you off it’s presently 0.04% of the atmosphere. Let’s keep to a percentage rather than parts per million as it’s easier to understand. So what is the target as a percentage ? (I’ll take parts per million if you can’t come up with a percentage as I can convert it).

I have replied. "We want to maintain CO2 to around current levels which means our emissions need to be Net Zero. Current as I have said above is about 422 parts per million in 1966 it was 320. I am quoting from an expert.

And you do realise that 422 parts per million is absolutely minute. The trees and plants need CO2 to survive. And we need them to produce oxygen.

The government SHOULD tell the developers what technology to use for new builds otherwise we will continue to live in the stone age. Developers will always go for the cheapest option if they can.

However for existing installations the government should NOT force impracticable upgrades, eg heat pumps. There is no way any of my 2 bed semis will ever be able to have a heat pump installed - just not enough room for starters.

IF you believe there is a 'climate crisis' then you also believe the problem is down in full to humankind (its ability to procreate and consume at unsustainable levels)
Therefore the whole cycle will not end and the 'crisis' not averted unless humankind is ceases to exist entirely or a cap on how many humans are allowed to exist at any one time so the position does not tip the 'neutrality' equation.
So Millibonce, are you stepping forward now to volunteer UK citizens to the slaughter for the sake of your unwavering/misunderstood/blind stupidity 'climate emergency' stance or is it just economic poverty for the interim?

even 'maintaining' a set level (whatever it is) does not equate with stopping global warming (if you believe that this is purely a man made problem to start with).
