DUP party manifesto on PRS and Housing Market policies

Considering the Hung Parliament result in the general election last week, and the subsequent agreement in whatever format it evolves to for the Conservatives to work with the DUP, it is worth a closer look at the DUP policies that concern the Housing Market and the Private Rental Sector.

From the DUP website on Policies >> http://www.mydup.com/policies/creating-stronger-communities

It states:

  • “BULK BUYING FROM PRIVATE SECTOR LANDLORDS
The DUP wants to drive up standards in the private landlord sector. It will introduce a bulk-renting scheme from combines of private landlord properties. In return for a guarantee of income the properties entered into the scheme must be equipped and maintained to higher standards.
  • REINTRODUCE A ‘LIVING OVER THE SHOPS’ SCHEME
The future of our town centres does not depend solely upon enhancing their retail offering. Town centres must become places where people do more than shop. They must become places where people live as well. We will further develop the work already started to reintroduce the previously successful ‘Living Over the Shop’ scheme where landlords were assisted in converting space above shops or offices into residential accommodation.
  • INCREASING INVESTMENT IN NEW SOCIAL & AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The case for investment in social housing is an unarguable one. House building has a hugely positive impact upon the local economy, creating and sustaining jobs not just in the construction sector, but also in professional services and retail. A safe, secure and warm home also produces health and educational benefits. The DUP commits to delivering a further 8,000 social and affordable housing units by 2020.
  • COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTS FOR AFFORDABLE HOMES
Community Land Trusts are a long-term solution to the issue of affordability and assist in community regeneration. Land prices are a key component in driving up property prices. This model places the land in trust and thus removes it from the cost of the home. Future selling prices are linked to a multiple of local incomes which allows the owner to see appreciation of their investment but still maintaining any re-sale price at an accessible level. The DUP will introduce schemes in different property hot spots across Northern Ireland.
  • RE-BIRTH OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND HOUSING EXECUTIVE (NIHE)
The DUP supports the transformation of the NIHE to a strategic housing body. This should include the transfer of its stock to fully utilise assets to make social housing more self-financing. In addition, the NIHE would receive additional powers to tackle the issue of empty homes.”

The DUP is socially conservative: it is anti-abortion, opposes same-sex marriage, and formerly campaigned against the legalisation of homosexual acts in Northern Ireland.[13] The party sees itself as defending Britishness and Ulster Protestant culture against Irish nationalism.[14][15] It is also Eurosceptic and backs the UK's withdrawal from the European Union. The party has been delineated as populist[5]. It has been described by The Independent as "a party backed by terrorists"[16] and by The New York Times as "a hard-line reactionary party."[17] IrishCentral has described the DUP as "extremist."

The DUP policies on housing seem far better thought through than in all of the other party manifesto's.

I propose engaging more landlords in NI and helping them to engage with DUP in the hope of getting our messages through to central government.

Any NI landlords reading this, are you up for the challenge?

Mind how you go Mark if you value your kneecaps. Don't venture down the Shankill Road.

I have no interest in religious politics, but we should all have an interest in housing because we all need a roof over our head, regardless of whether we have religious beliefs or what they might be. On this basis, the DUP have been put in a position of influence so it would be remiss of us not to recognise that opportunity.

I have met several people from NI and Eire and they have all been lovely, regardless of their faith. There will always be a criminal element in society, even landlords believe it or not. We mustn't let that deter or distract us.

Notwithstanding the easy jokes about the DUP,s ancestry, there is much to commend their manifesto pledges. They read somewhat in the Motherhood and apple pie league though and I can't find any mention of the tax system they have in the province, I am not too up on what their devolved admin. Is allowed to do in that respect, but if it is same as the English one, then the PRS is in for another rough time there.

"Irish central describes the dup as extreme".

The dup were democratically voted for by the majority of the population. They are regularly returned as the majority party. As such their views will be close to average and so they can't be extreme. It's strange but lefties nowadays seem to describe anyone with a different view to them as extreme, far right or fascist. But I guess if someone has an extreme far left Corbyn view than most people's normal views will seem extreme. Dup / ukip etc aren't extreme or far right. They are moderate right. People who describe them as extreme are themselves extreme.

Nothing extreme about what was just offered too the British public: proper investment in our NHS, social care and schools; more police on the streets; reversing SureStart cuts; free childcare for two- to four-year-olds; scrapping tuition fees and the bedroom tax; a real living wage; no more zero-hours contracts; protecting pensioners’ incomes; investing in infrastructure; and taking back control of our rail, water and energy industries. You have to have a Conscience & a moral compass...not a seared Conscience ...Love thy neighbour & spread the wealth.. you can't take it with you!!

With regard to Paul Green's comments about the 'unextreme' labour manifesto, the only item left out as far as I could see was Free beer for the Workers, Corbyn missed a trick there I think!
