Landlords and second home owners need to complete census forms for their properties even if no one is staying in them on census night.
To help landlords and holiday home owners, here is an FAQ covering the key points.
Second homes, holiday homes or vacant properties
Every home in the UK will have to fill in a 2011 Census questionnaire.
If you have a second home or holiday home in the UK, both addresses will receive a questionnaire.
What you need to do depends on whether anyone was staying overnight on census night, Sunday 27 March:
No-one staying on census night
If do not plan to stay at the address within six months, the questionnaire does not have to be completed – the property will count as vacant or empty. Census staff will confirm this by visiting the property.
If you are going to be staying at the address within six months, either before or after census day, complete the household questions (H1 to H11).
Someone was staying on census night
Completing the census form depends on the type of home and where you were on census night.
Second homes
If you have a second home and you were there on census night, complete a census questionnaire for the address where you usually live, and for the second address, answer the questions H1 to H11 and the visitor questions V1 to V4.
If completing a paper return, leave questions H2, H3 and H6 blank.
Non-UK residents with a UK home
If you have a UK address but you usually live outside the UK or if you have stayed or intend to stay in the UK for three months or more, complete the whole questionnaire including the individual questions.
If you are staying or intending to stay in the UK for less than three months, answer the household questions H1 to H11 and the visitor questions V1 to V4.
If completing a paper return, leave questions H2, H3 and H6 blank.
Census delivery to other addresses
If you can’t get to your other address and you would like to complete the questionnaire, you can request that a replacement for your second address be delivered to your usual address.

If you usually live in Scotland but your second home is in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, fill in a Scottish census questionnaire for your usual address and complete the appropriate sections of the questionnaire sent to your second home.
If your second home is in Scotland but you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, complete the questionnaire sent to your usual address, and contact the Census in Scotland helpline on 0300 123 1702 for advice on how your second property will be counted.
