Can nursing home fees be offset against rental income?

I have just been speaking to a friend of mine who’s Mother in Law has been in a nursing home for 6 months. The fees are £950 a week.

Her property has been rented out and the family make up the shortfall.

The (Spanish) tenants are returning home so there will be no income plus of course Council Tax to pay.

Does anyone know whether nursing home fees can be offset against rental income?

Any other advice gratefully received.

Many Thanks.

Adrian

Have you spoken to the care home about this loss of income? Are the rest of the family all on steady income or has your income also dropped due to Coronavirus? You may want to speak to them about this if it is the case as there may be some leeway they will give you. Apart from that there will not be any offsetting available on the rental income. If you are willing to sell it they may agree to a share of equity of the house so that once it is sold they will recoup their care home fees.

Agree, speak to the care home. I know some people who do similar to your friends. They have an agreement with the care home that when the sad day comes for their parent to pass on, any shortfall in fees will be made up through sale of the property, which does take the pressure off during difficult times.
