Brilliant letter!

I have written personalised emails to George Osborne, Christopher Chope (my MP),Brandon Lewis,Nick Boles, Anna Soubry, Sajid Javid, also the MP's where I have property, Theresa May and Vivendra Sharma (Labour). The last two probably won't respond as I'm not a constituent...although I used to be. Can but try!

Lovely letter Anne. And different from the other ones, which is great. It's really good for us to have different emphases. I think people are coming up with some really creative ideas - it's good you talked about the plumber with the van for example. The thing is there are so many angles on this and so many contradictions and repercussions - I really hope the message is getting through somewhere. I know it's early days, but I've had no replies yet from anyone.

Hi Appalled. It might not hurt though. My MP is Labour - and I thought he would be really left wing and anti-landlord, being in a Labour stronghold, but he isn't at all. I'm actually hoping he might come through better than the Tory Ministers on this. Wouldn't it be ironic to have Labour MPs arguing against this?
Basically, we need to find a few champions - a few people who don't say black is white, but can see the madness of this and be willing to speak up. That's why it's good we are spreading our net in terms of us all having different MPs, but also focusing on trying to get at the Cabinet, specifically all these so-called business ministers.

Another idea:
I wrote to the Daily Mail yesterday, trying to persuade them to do a front page story on this, and have heard nothing. I'm going to try other newspapers this week, working downwards according to circulation and whether I think they would support us. It wouldn't hurt if others also did this - using the letters already sent to MPs, but just amending where necessary. I kind of think I should give each one 48 hours to respond before moving on to the next one. I should do The Sun first, but haven't yet decided when to try them. The order I am doing is: Daily Mail; Daily Telegraph, (The Evening Standard is next but I don't live in London and would prefer someone else to do that one); Daily Express; (next should be Daily Star, but I'm not keen); The Times; the FT (that should maybe go higher up); the Independent.
I will also approach the Sunday papers.
As I say, it would be great if some of you could whip off a few of your excellent letters to these as well.

I have just sent a PS to George, with copies to Anna, Nick and Sajid:

Dear Mr Osborne

In my email this afternoon I forgot to include the effect that this change would have on someone who has many properties. One landlord published his figures on a forum discussing this subject and asked what the effect would be.

His rental profit is £72k after deducting interest of £82k. He has no other income. Currently his tax is £18k, which is 25% of his real income.

If interest were disallowed his tax (after deducting interest “relief” of £16k) would be £40k, which is more than double the current tax and is an astonishing 56% of his real income.

Is this what you intended?

Yours sincerely
