Hi guys.
I will write an article on this subject soon and with your permission, quote some of your comments about the programme (for the flow I may have to write one or two as though they are my ideas! Plagiarism, in other words - don't sue me).

The programme was of course incredibly unbalanced and woolly, but like the Express front page it then feeds into anti-landlord sentiment just before the Budget. Coincidence, or what? I thought it was more like the product of one of those crappy TV channels. Indeed, C5's 'Slum landlords, nightmare tenants' is far better, with a lot more balance, although even on that you often see a tenant living in a very cluttered house complaining about the state of it (when it's clear they never tidy or clean), who hasn't paid the rent for 6 months, but because there are some maintenance issues they are permitted to complain and their rent arrears are brushed to one side and then they're really happy at the end as they get given a council or HA flat in pristine condition!

"I personally would not allow benefit tenants to rent in the PRS." Not always quite that simple.Someone might get made redundant and claim HB and Jobseekers for a couple of months and then get a new job. Bit harsh to make them move immediately.

That is what many lenders' T&Cs expect you to do, of course!

Of course, not to mention insurance providers. But you probably wouldn't know unless they didn't pay the rent. And it'd take many months to evict them. Can you legally evict someone just for being unemployed?

Re: Can you legally evict someone just for being unemployed?
When I was in this position myself, informal legal advice was that the tenant would probably have a strong case for challenging the eviction, assuming they were up to date with the rent and had not breached the tenancy. Another case of landlords being stuck between two devils and getting all the blame..
