Nice one Natalie and Andrew. Yes, I couldn't believe it when I chanced upon that 2012 article. He should be ashamed of himself or at least write a piece on why he supported BTL and why he then felt the need to 'campaign' against it. I have asked him to tell me when he made the discovery that BTL is bad!
And maybe he would like to offer some kind of recompense to those he influenced to buy only to try and pull the rug from under them later.
On the other hand, I have never heard his name mentioned in the last four months of campaigning, so he may be claiming credit for something he actually had zero influence over. I haven't had a reply to my letter to him yet. I will probably put my letter on this site as an open letter so that he can be exposed.
These journalists often write ill-informed crap - actually, most of the time really, in my opinion and when they are called 'financial journalist of the year' or whatever, perhaps people think they know what they are talking about.
As of yet though, no-one - not even Richard Dyson - has fully laid out the catastrophic scenario facing many portfolio landlords if they don't take evasive action; no-one has fully spelt out what this is going to mean for tenants; no-one has taken a holistic view of the whole thing.
Having said that, of course Richard Dyson is the journalist who has had the most influence - even being quoted in Parliament - and his very first set of articles has had a long-lasting impact - with his talk of the lunatic tax etc. That was extremely helpful. This does go to show, however, that journalists have influence and power so we have to keep badgering them.

Hi David,

I don't understand why you think that reduced competition among rental providers is going to increase the standard and value of rental accommodation. These economics are counter-intuitive to the reality of every other privatised market. If you concentrate supply among fewer large suppliers, the pressure to price competitively and enhance the quality of the product will go down not up.

Also, the very reason we are up in arms about Clause 24 is that over the course of 5 years it is going to make not increasing our rents from current levels virtually impossible, forcing us to focus upon higher income tenants. This is because for many landlords, the enlarged tax bill it is going to produce added to mortgage outgoings will exceed the rents we currently charge. In some cases by very significant amounts.

Hi All,

Here are two further contacts we could make progress with:

1) megan.dunn@nus.org.uk & shelly.asquith@nus.org.uk

Megan Dunn is the President of the National Union of Students, who will be impacted by the higher rents and reduced availability of low-cost lets. This is something which they may be particularly conscious of following increases in student tuition fees. Were we to make contacts with the NUS explaining how Clause 24 is going to force landlords to increase rents or even sell-up, we might be able to make a completely different demographic appreciate the dangers this poses.

2) BBC 4's You and Yours - https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qps9/contact

I believe that if we were to get in contact with You and Yours en-masse, sending them post Clause 24 financial statements like what we have been showing to our MPs, they will begin to discern a widespread pattern across the UK along with its obvious knock-on social-consequences.

You and Yours is designed to appeal to a relatively more numerate and money-literate audience so the financial minutiae might be of slightly more assistance here than via other forums. Also, the program often holds live debates, sometimes drawing MPs to speak and answer questions concerning issues to have been raised on it.

Do you think there are more amateurs in the south? or more social housing?
If institutions control the market watch the rents rise. When nobody will house the poorest because of Ucredit and LHA cuts the government will do a deal with these guys . They will probably pay much more in housing benefit for it too. This will be seen as ok by general public as its not a personal landlord, who seem to constantly be precieved as wealthy and blood suckers.
If masses of landlords are forced out of the market it will affect all trades related to this. Its highly likely that institutions will employ there own workers, not necessary british workers either.

The institutions have been reluntant to enter the rental sector before in the UK for two reasons.

1. The large PRS
2. The low yields

This is why we are being attacked by the government, I beleive behind the scenes dealings. GO will end the PRS and increase the yields by taxing landlords out of exsistence. They will have no choice but to increase rents and it will be seen as greedy landlords .
Look they have evicted the poor and increased rents.
They wish for privatisation of all rental property including the social
housing.
What as happened to every industry which as been privatised.

Can we keep our new pet troll for a while please?

Sometimes these pathetic little creatures can be very motivational in terms of reminding us all how small minded, dim witted and jealous some people can be.

This one seems quite opinionated and probably thinks he's quite smart so we could have some fun with him.

I promise to pull the plug on him when he gets too annoying.

I'm sorry. Am I losing the plot? Name calling is not what I expected from you Mark. Surely everyone is entitled to their own opinion however much it might differ from the crowd. I'm sure there are what you rudely call pet trolls in this forum, or a so called mole as thought by Ros, but so what if there are if it adds to a healthier debate. More importantly is my concern that posting comments diverse from the majority way of thinking by someone who honestly & genuinely thinks differently to the crowd, will now feel bullied & alienated & therefore disinclined to add further comment. It's just not on.

Well, fight nicely Mark (that's a line from a 'Cramp Twins' cartoon my kids used to watch).
I can't be bothered myself - we've had the same old crap time and time again on this thread - people who joined us late may not have seen this. I don't feel any duty to 'debate' with them. It's vaguely possible they may contribute something we could use - but I haven't seen that yet.
I don't see any harm in playing with them though, so I give you my permission (as your mother).
