I think this idea could be pushed by property 118 and say written up in the telegraph by Richard dyson. We could then post a copy of the article directly to GO.

More anti-landlord crap. I've not had time to read it all as I have to go out, but I think some letters to Theresa Pearce wouldn't go amiss - looks like the usual blind prejudice and, as Richard Dyson has pointed out this week, 'the politics of envy' at work again:

I think the sellers will take the hit, we are near the top of the seven year bubble and prices (outside London) are still well below 2007 levels, recent legislation is the final straw for the buy to let model

Hi Ros, I believe there is a mechanism for amending or rescinding a bill, even after it has received Royal Assent (pasty tax). I don't think Clause 24 will be scrapped initially; however, I think an amendment not to make it retrospective may be possible. Whilst I understand that won't help those who still intended to build their B2L businesses, it is a way the Government could do a U turn, or sorts, without losing face, and I doubt anyone could reasonably argue that an amendment such as that was unfair.

It will probably only be scrapped if the consequences that we, and other organisations, predict happen. Those consequences could take several years to filter through, by which time many landlords could be in dire straits with their businesses in ruins. By the time that happens I dare say that the blame will fall anywhere else, except at the Government's door.

Good for you (and everyone else) for being persistent. I really think persistence in keeping up the pressure is key - meeting with MPs face to face, and providing evidence of personal impact is the strongest way to do that, I believe.

And, of course, additionally writing to journalists, exploring and sharing strategies to mitigate the various measures and making submissions to the Lords for their housing review (as Gareth suggested) http://www.landlords.org.uk/news-campaigns/news/help-the-nla-tell-peers-about-the-economics-the-uk-housing-market

Hi ML, it's a great idea - although I think that the Conservative Party elect leaders by their MPs voting. I think it was only Labour who extended the leadership vote to its members - hence the election of Jeremy Corbyn. I think the only way to achieve it would be for the Tatton constituents to vote him out in the next election - which could happen, if you have a look at its history (though I wouldn't put money on it).

The constituency was created in 1983 from parts of the seats of Runcorn, Cheadle, Northwich and Knutsford. It was held by the Conservative Neil Hamilton until 1997.

Tatton shot to fame during the 1997 general election campaign, becoming one of the highest-profile constituencies at that election. Following Hamilton's implication in the Cash for Questions scandal of the 1990s, the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats withdrew their candidates in favour of the former BBC journalist Martin Bell, who stood as an Independent, while those two parties supported his "anti-corruption" campaign. Bell was ultimately victorious, with a majority of over 11,000 over Hamilton.

Bell did not contest the seat at the 2001 election, and the seat was won by Conservative George Osborne with a majority of 8,611 (20.8%).

Does anyone on Property 118 live or own rental properties within the Tatton constituency?

If so, your local newspaper needs to hear about you!

The political reality is that “BTL Landlords, make a wonderful punching bag”, since “there aren’t that many of them”. So the Chancellor “can whack them” all he wants, at very little cost to his own political base, while attracting voters who may not traditionally be Tories.

Hi Chris,

If there are two candidates there will be a postal ballot of all Conservative party members. If there are more than two candidates, their fellow MPs will whittle the number down to two through their own system of ballots, and then the wider postal ballot will be held.

Given that there's a decent probability of Boris and Theresa May running too, I believe a postal ballot of the membership will be inevitable.

Because George Osborne will most likely be one of those final two, we should prepare for this eventuality and join the party.
