Yes, ML. Contrary to the angle perpetuated in the media, many of us have never been 'money-grabbing,' and were happy for rents to remain low and provide us with a modest income. I now realise I could have been charging thousands more per month for my portfolio and have started the increases now - we can't wait as we don't know what interest rates might do and what massively reduced actual income we might have, as opposed to the 'fictitious income.'
I am increasing the rents in a very gradual way to hopefully not spook my tenants - so I've only made little increases for now - between 2.5 and 5%. This time next year I'll see what I then have to do. In the meantime, when tenancies end, it's all fair game - e.g. I had to evict someone and after re-doing the house because she left it like a hovel - I am going to charge £565 (instead of the £475 I received for the last 7 years, with no increase). Apparently, other landlords charge £700, but I think that's too much and couldn't do it. I can imagine having it at about £625 though in a few years' time.

A very concise article, but if the government hasn't applied logic or sense to the legislation, they will not listen to it now. It's just a sop to the politics of envy, and an easy target for raising tax. I challenge any tenant or first time buyer to explain why this will benefit them!

How about starting another petition of no confidence in the Public Bill Committee?

My initial reaction is: BRILLIANT! Why not? Let's have a think about it, to see if anyone can think why we shouldn't and in the meantime I offer a first draft of the wording (I haven't re-checked how many words are allowed yet) - for us to improve on:
We propose a vote of no confidence in the Finance Bill Committee. 'The 90 [check amount] submissions made to the Finance Bill Committee were ignored entirely by the Committee members; we believe they were not even read.
The sparse discussion that took place and lasted x minutes revealed the Committee's ignorance about Clause 24, its meaning and the ramifications. Had the Committee members read even a fraction of the written evidence they would have had serious concerns about this ludicrous and ill-thought out policy going ahead.
We would add that if Committee members do not even read written evidence, what is the point of this being invited from concerned parties? We would prefer to be told that no written evidence is admissible as none is going to be read. We propose a vote of no confidence in the Finance Bill Committee and respectfully request the Committee reconvene after the members have read the written evidence. If this is not done, this makes a mockery of the democratic process.'
[this is just an extract from a letter I wrote, so I offer it as a starting point]

I still think pressure needs to be put on the RLA etc to mount a legal challenge funded by their members.

I agree we need to keep in mind a legal challenge. I don't think we are at that stage yet though - although it is important to prepare for that. But it's not either/or. We need to attack on all fronts and I can't yet see any objection to this new petition - but am happy to be persuaded otherwise.

Has anyone heard any reliable legal advice that there are any grounds for a legal challenge?

I don't think so, but I know Mark A had contacts give. The previous legal challenge to bank of Ireland / west brom - maybe when he is back we can agree to pool funds for an opinion from a barrister.
