I'm starting to think that the government expect the rents to increase greatly. Low yields was one of the barriers of getting the big boys in.

If rents increase it will look much more attractive to them.

So I think they are betting on increased rents rather than landlords selling.

Interesting article Kathy. Maybe some Property118ers could make some comments on there - John Redwood might then see them.
I wrote him a long letter today - sent by snail post, in the hope that something he can hold in his hand will be more likely to be read.

This is an interesting argument Kathy. I wouldn't go as far as to say the Government had planned it that way - I think they didn't even think or care about rents (I also don't like to attribute to them too much intelligence, because I don't believe they are that bright); but it could work in the favour of the big guys, by chance.
However, apparently, historically, institutions haven't wanted to get too involved in build to rent because there aren't the returns. We know that. They certainly wouldn't want to get involved in some of the druggy type streets up the valleys and won't be moving into dole-land.
In terms of student accommodation, a young student starting at a university in the valleys told me the other day that it costs £110 per week for halls; in the local private rented sector you can get a room in a shared house with bills included for £250 a month, so there is quite a gap between the two.

John redwood is our man for this campaign. I have sent him a letter today and I really hope others on here do so too. He clearly has common sense and isn't afraid to speak his mind.

Kathy I'm convinced that you're right that Government want rents to sky rocket but I think they see this as an incentive for many of our foreign workers to go back to their home countries.

That way they get the housing crisis reduced and unemployment down as British workers could take over the job the foreigner has vacated. The major flaw with the latter part of that plan is that many British people wouldn't want those jobs. I'm still convinced that's a secondary strategy to their game plan though.

Speak of the devil. I have just received a reply from John redwood. He states that he understands my points but he thinks the chancellor is determined to implement the proposal despite the consequences.

Uh, excuse me Dislexic. We've had that kind of message at least every week since the Budget. Are you saying that because of what one person just said, you have given up? Is that the attitude that won us the war?

I agree. I feel pretty despondent, but tomorrow is another day. Either way I'm absolutely positive that there is a solution to this, whether the government amend it or not.
