Mark, as Ros suggested that we need to educate Martin & Co as I feel their comments can be hugely detrimental in the run up to Finance Bill being concluded.

This is exactly what government wants to justify their tyranny.

Has the petition been closed as there appears to be some suggestion that it has been as it is being discussed in parliament as part of the finance bill?

I completely agree Trendo with your statement, but alas I live in Tory heartland and am surrounded by PC highly tolerant folk so these views are held by middle earning families! The same folk who voted in the Tories the first time round 6 years ago and it wasn't until they removed many of their working child tax credits a year or so later and more recently cut their Child Benefit when they reached a higher tax threshold, that they then realised the full implications, but again that was ok too!!! So it won't be until this nonsense tax is implemented, say at 50% and they then get pushed into higher tax codes, that it will be FELT - for now my arguments are falling on deaf ears and many are LLs, albeit with 1 property and new to the arena! The loss of W&T coupled with the proposed changes to a system that has been around since I worked abroad in the 90s and rented out my flat in London (hence my accidental title) will unleash havoc and is simply UNFAIR for those that have been able to build up a little empire on this system. I hasten to add it is most definitely NOT my view as I can readily see the perils in this especially for those in social housing.

Just had call from an old friend who has a few properties. He asked me 'what's all this landlord tax business about?' He literally had no idea what the government have proposed. Luckily for him he will be little affected, but it just goes to show that the general public, including people who have bought a few properties have absolutely no idea what is coming - If this nonsense proposal goes ahead.

No it is still open until end of Jan 2016.

I also thought it was closed but it had more than 100 signatures in last 2 hours.

It'll be worse if Corbyn gets in and the Tories loose the next election - we'll all be lucky to get rent controls at approved levels rather than forced sales at a discount.

Note comments from Brandon Lewis about the private rented sector:

http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/news/brandon-lewis-renews-government-commitment-to-prs

"We will crack down on rogue landlords and drive them out of business. But we will never jeopardise the new appetite for investment in this sector with red tape and unnecessary regulation. That would simply undo the good work of the last 5 years – a journey that has taken this country from the brink of bankruptcy to the fastest growing advanced economy in the world.”

He is silent on the absurd Alice in Wonderland tax that will jeopardise new appetite for investment in the private rented sector.

The Government position is very clear. They want to drive out small scale landlords to make way for institutional investment and they will provide the institutions with cheap loans to achieve their objectives.

This has to be the topic for a future article in the Telegraph.

Note comments from the Chartered Institute of Housing on the spending review. They are calling for tax incentives for landlords.

Manchester Landlord, they are right in saying that there won't be any U turn as far as legislation goes but I bet you a bottom dollar that it will only apply to NEW BORROWINGS only.

I believe chancellor pulled this stunt to appease disgruntled first time buyers without hitting existing landlords but at the same time opening a new door for new borrowings by not taxing ltd companies which will be way forward post April 2017.

The writing is on wall...just think about it why would he leave LTD companies untouched!!
