How nice to read a true account from somebody that obvious realizes the true massive problems the country will be facing if this is allowed in.

Hi Kathleen. I just glanced at the first page or two (I'm getting a bit tired of it after a busy few hours on the campaign), but it looks excellent with some great references we can use - I like the one about how BTL has a negligible effect on house prices. That's a brilliant one for our armoury. And also how most tenants are happy with their landlords. This is going to be a great resource. Everyone should take a look at it. I think this is the direct link to the page:
http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/pdf/InvestingInBuyToLet.pdf

I only just glanced at it, so haven't yet seen the bit about other European countries.

Yes really good, hes saying its totally wrong to take away the interest relief as the real gain would be on the capital. He actually seems to think we should get a better deal
Also note page 9 HMRC tax relief on rental income for 2010-2011

Hi Ros

Yes, it's a good article, but even he describes our interest as a "tax perk" at least twice, instead of simply as a cost. A company car is a tax perk; our interest isn't. I clicked on the comments 3 times but they didn't appear. When you contact him, can you educate him on this point, please?

Yes, if he answers me I will! I see the education as a gradual step-by-step process. And I have to use tact, which doesn't come naturally to me. Some people have written some downright infuriating stuff, but I try and start my emails with a compliment. I thought his was definitely veering in the right direction and hope we can build on this kind of reporting.
Have you looked at the report found by Kathleen? That looks like a really good one:

http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/pdf/InvestingInBuyToLet.pdf

I notice now that the address says 'landlordzone.' I'm pretty sure they've sent out emails minimising the tax change, so that's strange. I sent them an email weeks ago about it and heard nothing.

Just to clarify the article that Kathleen was originally referring to was http://www.treanor.co.uk/books/HousingPoliciesinEurope.pdf
The one that Ros referred to is different http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/pdf/InvestingInBuyToLet.pdf
But both are interesting.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the link.

On page 16 he writes:

“In the UK for individual landlords it [rental income] is treated the same as other investment income where losses cannot be carried over to future years or offset against earned income.”

I think he meant to say that we cannot carry losses back to get a refund of tax already paid. We certainly can carry them forward to be set off against future rental profits - that is all that we can do with them.
