Not strictly true James, HMRC already restrict tax relief on debt to the original purchase price of the property, except where the new debt is used for further property investment.

If I knew the answer to that Shakeel, I might also be able to explain why 2 million landlords and 5 million tenants haven't signed it either.

The short answer I can offer you is one word .............. " apathy".

Are the 120k hits unique, or are they from the same people (eg 100 hits by 12k landlords etc)?

Hi Mark,
Not for a moment. I thought that you would not have an answer.

Perhaps from your data base, you could target them with some spirited text, a..e kicking action and if not the fear of God than the tax man.

These people will have friends & family, twitter account etc & to remind them that they don't have to be landlord.

I am aware that a lot of people are away and while lying in the sun planning their future etc. So it will be a good time to hit them upon their return & before worrying about as where the mother in law will be sleeping on Christmas.

They are page views, hence it could be 100 page views by 1,200 readers.

I'm doing my best Shakeel and will continue to do so.

The Petition isn't the be all and end all though. The 10,000 who have already signed it obviously understand the imp0lications. They cannot rest on their laurels now. They need to do a lot more lobbying in disaster is to be averted. That doesn't just involve getting their mates to sign the petition, it goes a LOT further than that.

Landlords need to make a LOT more noise, lobbying local government, MP's, Lords, associated interest groups etc. etc. etc.

I am but one voice.

A lot of it is down to ignorance, people simply aren't aware of it or of the consequences.

It will take 5 years for this to filter through fully. The petition would easily get the required support, given enough time.

10,000 signatures already is not to be lightly dismissed either. Compare that with other petitions.

Assuming 10k petitions originally originated from 118.....that's not a bad response rate from a reader ship of 120k.....assuming only a fraction are active at any one time. Many ebusinesses would love thar kind of response rate. What happened to the idea of crowd funding a campaign 5hat was muted few weeks back. That was a good idea.

I had never heard of Property118 prior to signing the petition. There were only 16 signatures at that time. I came across this site via another landlord. Have been mostly pushing via Twitter and Facebook, although I have already had an interesting response from someone looking forward to landlords failing. Much more work to be done to raise awareness. Did anyone have any contacts with the organizers of the Landlords and lettings show in September? This would be the place to raise awareness of the issues and get people signing the petition at the same time.

@Mark,
I know you are & I did not want to remind you of something that would be so obvious.

Specially you have a lot at stake. If this does not change I am sure you would not like to spend your live in the chill winds of St Petersburg.

Monty, is right it is the ignorance.. The old rent act changed in 1988 and it took people decade to be aware of the change.

I recall that mortgage express was one of the early lenders who entered the Buy to let mortgages in 1990. I was onto them in 1990.

Mortgage express did an article on me in the good old fashion " Evening standard " as one of their buy to let landlords in addition I had a long debate about landlords taking life insurance. They were convinced that I could write of the premium against my income. It took me a long time to convince them that the insurance will be on my life & not the property and I also get multiple life insurances i.e. tied up to each mortgage.
