Most likely. The sod opened up access to pensions knowing that the bulk of those that took the money (after paying tax on 75% of it) would pile it into property. It was a complete set up.

I wonder how many of those people are (sorry.... were) Tory voters.

Forgetting Landlords for the moment - as we do interact with the housing shortage - I take great exception to the way Kraft toook a profit making, tx-paying, briton emploing company like Cadbury, loaded it with debt and stopped paying tax and employing brotons. Or were cdbury about to go broke.

As I see it, the taxman is looking for a regular income from businesses and workers in the country. One of his problems is that they scrapped indexation when assessing CG, so people wee suddenly trapped with properties they have owned for decades paying tax on illusory gains.

Bring back indexation, apply a low level rollover tax, and at least some of us will stop bleating.

A simple fair tax system is what we need, so that it makes more sense to spend time making more money than in devising tax avoidane schemes.

What would they do if we refused to pay tax en mass? Remember the poll tax riots.

For many, refusal will not be an option, many will simply not have the money. If the proposals go ahead the Government will have this problem to face because there will be no other available choices.

Isn't that the point - the btl sector has generally managed to minimise or eliminate paying tax on an annual basis - so perhaps George's bright lads in the treasury are looking to cull the more exposed amongst us and flush out some CGT.

Just have to manage within the 20% band if you can.

Really Chris? What makes you think the BTL sector has managed to minimise or eliminate paying tax?

I just received a newsletter from 'landlordzone'. They did a big piece on the issue, playing it down somewhat, I thought. No mention of the kind of scenarios which will follow when people are taxed on fictitious income etc. They also did not put in the link to the petition as I asked them to.
I've posted a comment at the bottom of their article with the link to the petition, but I don't know how many will see it.
If anyone else receives this newsletter today, maybe they can write back and also ask if Landlordzone can put a link in their next newsletter?

Has anyone heard anything about the RLA and NLA promoting the petition? Have I missed a comment on this?

Exactly - I'm earning more, I'm taxed more as it is with the rest of the nation. I just don't like the idea of being taxed on zero profit or losses. HMRC states that interest from fiance and loans from an individual's business is not taxed. Well, this contravenes that principle.

Has anyone contacted tenants' associations? Anyone know any? Or homeless charities, though they think we're all evil?
