This is a really interesting article - thanks Chris. An odd situation though... It says the BoE do not want house prices to drop, yet here they go completely cocking things up and potentially prompting the biggest house price drop since the recession.

It makes you wonder how you get to be an economist at the BoE.

Hello Mark, i took time to read your analysis of the potential impacts of the proposed changes to the tax system for individual landlords, it does seem grossly unfair on hard working folks who have built up a property portfolio.
As you know, I disagree with the public sector housing sell off which has been going on since 1981, which has left a lot of property in private hands (rightly or wrongly), this combined with increased migration and a lack of new building, in particular keeping pace with the asset stripping of the public housing stock, is all negative.
I note this change does not apply to ltd companies who will also benefit from a reduced tax rate in future. As you say, pointless paying tax on losses but what is to be done ? Perhaps a downsizing or restructure into a ltd, it will be costly and a newly formed ltd is not guaranteed to be creditworthy.
Certainly a hopeless position for landlords not under the ltd umbrella. Ill try and think of some clever answers, at least its being phased in (small mercy) but it seems to me that this country is heading to another housing crash if the full phase in plus reduced tax credits and the benefit cap (long overdue) plus the inevitable interest rate rise (it should never have been reduced from 4%) altogether don’t bode well.
Best of luck with your raising awareness campaign and remember - we did vote them in !

Suggest wording to promote the petition:

ATTENTION – Consider these questions.

Should a business pay more in tax than they earn in profit?

Should a business pay tax even if they make a loss?

The Government think for individual landlords (but not property companies) the correct answer is YES.

If you are with US and believe the correct answer is NO, please show your support by signing this petition.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/104880

We want this issue debated in Parliament.

Here's a working link to money week article.

It never occurred to me that George osbourne may be planning this on order to force landlords to sell and crystallise deferred capital gains tax.
