Angela Rayner dodges landlord questions in LBC interview clash

In a feisty exchange on LBC, the Shadow Housing Secretary Angela Rayner refused to comment on Labour’s plan for landlords.

Ms Rayner found herself in a heated exchange with LBC presenter Andrew Castle, who repeatedly pressed her about the growing number of landlords leaving the market.

The Labour politician vehemently disagreed landlords were leaving and argued: “There were plenty of landlords around.”

Countless amount of landlords

Ms Rayner told Mr Castle: “We’ve got a countless amount of landlords at the moment. There’s plenty of them around.”

Mr Castle interrupted her and argued that landlords are leaving the market which is why rents are going up.

However, Ms Rayner completely swerved the question and instead argued social housing was the solution.

She said: “One of the problems in our housing market at the moment is we don’t have enough social housing and that’s the real problem and we will deliver social housing.”

High demand and low supply

Mr Castle did not back down and told Ms Rayner: “Landlords are leaving the market. They are the ones that provide millions of homes for people across the country. The conditions are too difficult for landlords, there’s no money in it for them.

“They feel like they are being pressured from every side. Then when it comes to renew their buy-to-let mortgage, it’s now through the roof. They have to pass on those costs to their tenants.

“High demand and low supply, rents go up, just wondered if you’ve got a plan as Shadow Housing Secretary for landlords?”

Rent costs are very high

Again, Ms Rayner completely dodged the question and instead focused on social housing.

She said: “The rent costs at the moment they’re very high. I’m going to build the houses we need, that’s the point I’m making.”

The full exchange can be seen here.

So was Prescott but that landed them in power and with that sharp Mandelson guiding this Labour party to governing is what it is all about. Once in government they will cause havoc in PRS ala Truss era

They will do it this time, and reduce the voting age.

I know everyone jumps on Truss for her naivety as PM, but the reality is interest rates were already well on their way up [far too late] and our economic situation is actually now worse than her few weeks in power. She is a useful scapegoat to trot out in soundbites, but I'm sure not sure what havoc Truss caused in the PRS.

Truss caused havoc to financial markets although dark forces behind the scenes did not help. Although she was receptive to binning S21 as she knew about supply side economics in PRS.

It’s interesting how labour have stolen her ‘ growth ‘ message.

Truss would have got rid of lots of red tape for PRS but I just feel we will get more from labour.

Those 'dark forces' made it impossible for her to remain. She was badly advised and naive, possibly deliberately, but IMHO if she could have been given a few weeks to back-track in order to follow the right process, we would not now have Sunak and Hunt, and have a growth strategy in place.

We have sold two in last two years.
Cost to refit new shower/bath/ oven have risen by at least 60% on materials and labour.
Social housing pays for all repairs , insurance , upkeep, hedges, verges, breakages , often white goods replaced, new shower, new oven … private landlords have to pay out if their own pockets.
Rayner and fellow clowns do not have a clue - nor Gove , pair of them totally clueless

We once had statesmen and women, true ambassadors for our country who could represent us well on a global stage.
No longer, instead we have these sorts of people, who have the audacity to think that they have the capability to run a country, having never run anything more than a bath. Can you imagine rent a gob being taking seriously by the highest echelons of the military, judiciary or commerce? It is beyond belief and just goes to show that no one with any serious talent is interested in pursuing a career in politics.
And as for building more houses, where is that money coming from? Back to the magic money tree I suspect.

I said exactly the same when there was a danger Corbyn could become PM. Imagine his response to the invasion of Ukraine! Well, at least we will have been spared 5 years embarrassment.

Angela Rayner is not a bad woman. She has grafted herself up from an unpromising start to be at the top of her Party. On any view, well done. Give credit where it is due.
She probably doesn't have a clue about the landlord's perspective.
Firstly, she has never seen it from her family beginning and perspective. Second, I suspect nobody has invited her to look at it sensibly? I mean someone not just shouting at her but offering a proper overview? No point just shouting and screaming, the more anyone shouts at me, the deafer I get!
I see Angela Rayner as a highly intelligent lady (with what may be a very significant future!!) who this thread must engage in a constructive way to make any progress in what I respectfully suggest is at the moment a complete shambles?
