Angela Rayner dodges landlord questions in LBC interview clash

In a feisty exchange on LBC, the Shadow Housing Secretary Angela Rayner refused to comment on Labour’s plan for landlords.

Ms Rayner found herself in a heated exchange with LBC presenter Andrew Castle, who repeatedly pressed her about the growing number of landlords leaving the market.

The Labour politician vehemently disagreed landlords were leaving and argued: “There were plenty of landlords around.”

Countless amount of landlords

Ms Rayner told Mr Castle: “We’ve got a countless amount of landlords at the moment. There’s plenty of them around.”

Mr Castle interrupted her and argued that landlords are leaving the market which is why rents are going up.

However, Ms Rayner completely swerved the question and instead argued social housing was the solution.

She said: “One of the problems in our housing market at the moment is we don’t have enough social housing and that’s the real problem and we will deliver social housing.”

High demand and low supply

Mr Castle did not back down and told Ms Rayner: “Landlords are leaving the market. They are the ones that provide millions of homes for people across the country. The conditions are too difficult for landlords, there’s no money in it for them.

“They feel like they are being pressured from every side. Then when it comes to renew their buy-to-let mortgage, it’s now through the roof. They have to pass on those costs to their tenants.

“High demand and low supply, rents go up, just wondered if you’ve got a plan as Shadow Housing Secretary for landlords?”

Rent costs are very high

Again, Ms Rayner completely dodged the question and instead focused on social housing.

She said: “The rent costs at the moment they’re very high. I’m going to build the houses we need, that’s the point I’m making.”

The full exchange can be seen here.

Countless landlords, hence the reason I am getting phone calls from Serco asking if I have any properties available or if I am looking to buy any more! And Labour are pushing this woman as the possible next UK prime minister. If that happens the UK is pucked.

I don't think the amount of skiled labour required to construct the amount of new housing being proposed is available - The industry has been very stretched over recent years and while there appears to be some spare capacity now, its unlikely there will be enough to cary out the current proposals

Reply to the comment left by Crouchender at 11/10/2023 - 11:14My family voted Labour because that's what working class people did. But as soon as I turned 18, and could see the Labour Party for what it was; keeping the masses ignorant and dependent on the State, I voted Tory. I have done for half a century, except for Brexit. Not next time.
I will vote Reform UK. I know the argument about being a wasted vote, and splitting the Tory vote, but the Tories have squandered their massive majority, not delivered what so many wanted and expected, and have been weak. They are already foocked, so there's nothing to lose.
All I can point to is what happened in 2010. Maybe, just maybe, with enough red wall voters, Nigel can do what Clegg did in 2010, what he did in 2016, what he did in 2019 to lead the largest single party in the European Parliament, and what he did in 2019 to help Boris. Those red wall seats were up for grabs by Nigel, and should be again!

So did my family, but they have long since woken up and smelled the coffee.
Unfortunately, not enough of the Welsh have followed suit.

Fingers crossed Nigel can get in one way or another. He won't sit back like some wet lettuce letting the UK be pushed around. We need to get more like Poland.

Is Angela Rayner more dangerous in her former role as shadow education secretary with no educational qualifications at all OR in her current role as shadow housing minister, knowing virtually nothing about housing and the basic mechanics of supply and demand? How can somebody knowing so little potentially be let lose as a minister?
And when is our failed political class going to face up to the fact that the real issue is on the demand side, with up to 10 million people in England alone who do not need to be here!

Reply to the comment left by NewYorkie at 11/10/2023 - 12:14The problem is the first past the post electoral system for Westminster and English local government, where votes do not count equally and where a majority of MPs can be elected on a minority of votes. It can take as little as 37% of the popular vote for the Tories to obtain over 50% of the seats. Nigel Farage could come through with UKIP in the Euro Parliament because they have a fair one person one equal vote electoral system. It speaks volumes for the Labour party as a party supposedly committed to the notion of equality that it did not reform the electoral system for Westminster decades ago. They are just as greedy for power and as dodgy as the Tories.
