Angela Rayner dodges landlord questions in LBC interview clash

In a feisty exchange on LBC, the Shadow Housing Secretary Angela Rayner refused to comment on Labour’s plan for landlords.

Ms Rayner found herself in a heated exchange with LBC presenter Andrew Castle, who repeatedly pressed her about the growing number of landlords leaving the market.

The Labour politician vehemently disagreed landlords were leaving and argued: “There were plenty of landlords around.”

Countless amount of landlords

Ms Rayner told Mr Castle: “We’ve got a countless amount of landlords at the moment. There’s plenty of them around.”

Mr Castle interrupted her and argued that landlords are leaving the market which is why rents are going up.

However, Ms Rayner completely swerved the question and instead argued social housing was the solution.

She said: “One of the problems in our housing market at the moment is we don’t have enough social housing and that’s the real problem and we will deliver social housing.”

High demand and low supply

Mr Castle did not back down and told Ms Rayner: “Landlords are leaving the market. They are the ones that provide millions of homes for people across the country. The conditions are too difficult for landlords, there’s no money in it for them.

“They feel like they are being pressured from every side. Then when it comes to renew their buy-to-let mortgage, it’s now through the roof. They have to pass on those costs to their tenants.

“High demand and low supply, rents go up, just wondered if you’ve got a plan as Shadow Housing Secretary for landlords?”

Rent costs are very high

Again, Ms Rayner completely dodged the question and instead focused on social housing.

She said: “The rent costs at the moment they’re very high. I’m going to build the houses we need, that’s the point I’m making.”

And during the years it will take for this social housing to be built [if at all], landlords will continue to exit the PRS in ever increasing numbers, leaving tenants with nowhere to live. Hotels are full of illegal migrants, with the staff sacked, so the UK hospitality sector will be decimated, and the benefits bill will increase [More State dependents to vote Labour!].

This woman is dangerous. We can only hope she has been sufficiently demoted [housing!] to have little power.

It isn’t only ‘landlords leaving the market’ that is causing rents to rise. It’s unprecedented demand for housing caused by an increasing population.

How on earth are they to build social homes whilst UK 30yr govt bonds are over 5% with taxpayer subsidised rent as only payback, and being much less than 5% return, and who will build them without being a high build cost or low quality. This policy is just electioneering. I can't see private money going in without guaranteed high returns at taxpayers expense.
Her policies are as convincing as her angry language.

I listened to Rayner last w/end with Andrew Castle. He has developed into a fairly determined interviewer but PM hopeful Raynor by-passed the question repeatedly thanks to night classes in politician-speak & `how-to-not-answer-the-question` training..at which she`s good but FFS..I cannot bring myself to imagine she would be a serious leader of my country..a bad dream.

One thing for sure, you will see increased capital gains tax to deter landlords exiting the market whilst they tie us up in more regulation of tenant rights.

She was only wheeled in to act a John Prescott next to the 2023 version of Blair- Starmer!

I can't see how Labour bandwagon for forming a government in 2024 is going to fall apart.

We need Momentum to up their game and flush out what the Labour party is.

i.e It hates anyone (like me) who came from a working class background, worked hard til my 50s , saved my money, invested in property and now they will probably tax my rental income and only income nowadays (unearned income in their jargon) at 40% minimum.

Where is the aspiration motivation in life with Labour.
